Canadian Cities In Western Provinces Will See Most Economic Growth

The Conference Board Of Canada released its spring metropolitan outlook which states that the resource rich economies of Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary will be the top centres for growth in Canada. The report puts Saskatoon in first place in 2012 with gross domestic product at 3.6%, followed by Calgary at 3.5% and Edmonton at 3.2%. However, for 2013-16 Calgary will be at the top spot at 4.1%, followed by Edmonton at 4.7% and Saskatoon at 3.4%.

The report said that “Construction and manufacturing will propel Saskatoon’s GDP growth to a nation-leading 3.6% in 2012.” It added, “Calgary’s GDP growth of 3.5% in 2012 will be supported by improved consumer spending and manufacturing. Strong consumer spending will help sustain economic growth of 3.2% in Edmonton this year.”

Growth in Canada as a whole is forecasted in 2012 to come in about 2.1% thanks to what the report calls a “volatile global economic environment.” All 13 of the cities included in the report are expected to see their economies grow over the forecast period by anywhere from 1.6% to 3.6% this year and from 2.1% to 4.1% between 2013-2016.
