Harper Talks With World Leaders At Nuclear Security Summit

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is currently at the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, Korea. The summit stressed the need to monitor and control nuclear materials and technology to prevent nuclear terrorism.

During the summit, Canada renewed its commitments to battling nuclear terrorism, including a $367 million renewal of the Global Partnership Program for five years. Ottawa has already invested over $800 into the initiative. Canada will also be increasing the amount of used nuclear material it will send to the United States to make it harder for terrorist and criminal groups to get hold of. Harper described nuclear terrorism as, “one of the most challenging threats to nuclear security today,” but that, “alongside out allies, Canada’s committed to securing nuclear material from around the world.”

Harper also used the meetings to focus on trade and the economy in private meetings with leaders from the European Unions and India. He said, “we’re working hard here to work with others and increase jobs growth and long-term prosperity for Canadians. And ultimately our view is that as a trading nation and as a global economy, all our interests are linked in the regard.”
