Harper To Encourage Foreign Investment In Canada In Davos

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said “the economy remains our No.1 focus for the year” and an upcoming budget will be a “significant milestone” for Canada. As he arrives for the World Economic Forum in Davos, he will also be urging European leaders to step up their game and put an end to the crisis before the situation escalates engulfing the global economy.  Canada is likely to be the envy of many in Europe with a healthy domestic economy and a stable banking sector. In a statement the Conservative Government claimed that, “thanks to Canada’s economic action plan the national economy has recovered from the global recession better than most countries.” It has been reported that Harper will use his keynote speech to encourage enthusiasm for foreign investment in Canada, to drive economic activity as his government pulls back on stimulus spending. He will be trying to boost Canada’s economy by signing a trade deal with the European Union.

Harper should be careful not to be too confident in Canada’s current economic state. While yes it has fared better than most it is not completely immune to the situation in Europe. Furthermore, earlier this week the IMF lowered Canada’s growth forecasts. In response to these threats Harper wants Europe to erect a larger “firewall” – ultimately more money – to stop more of its countries from entering a debt spiral.
