Prime Minister Harper Arrives In China For Trade Mission

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper touched down in China today for his official 4 day visit through the country. The aim of the trip is to focus on Canada and China’s relationship in terms of oil, particularly China’s billion dollars worth of investment in Canada’s oilfields as China is Canada’s second most important trading partner. China has an impressive and continuously growing economy that cannot be ignored. With this is mind, Harper is expected to commit to promoting a “strategic partnership between the two countries and to increase business ties with China, the second largest economy in the world. Harper said last week that the relationship between the countries is “very important to the Canadian economy” and will continue to be a focus for his government. Speaking of the trip he said, “It is essential that we continue to diversify out trade and continue to penetrate particularly the Asia market, with not just China, but Asia more broadly, where we see most global growth and frankly the prospects for growth.”

Some have criticised Canada’s ties with China, considering Beijing’s human rights violations as Amnesty International reported that as many as half a million Chinese are in punitive detention without having been charged or undergone a proper trial, while harassment, surveillance, house arrest , and imprisonment of human rights defenders are on the rise.  However, with an increasing amount of countries wanting to improve trade ties with the power house that is China, many have stopped their criticism is recent years despite an unimproved situation.  Harper is expected to address the country’s human rights record during his stay.
