Survey Suggests Economy Is A Threat To National Unity

According to a survey conducted for Postmedia News and Global TV by Ipsos Reid, Canada’s political system appears headed for a division among voters that could imperil national unity. The new poll shows the governing Conservative and opposition New Democrats battling for the top spot in popularity. It shows the Conservatives remain dominant in the West, rural Canada and among Suburban taxpayers in southern Ontario but the NDP is fast becoming the political alternatives to the Tories, with strong support in Quebec and urban Ontario. Divisive economic debates loom over issues such as tax cuts and the importance of Albertan’s oilsands to the country’s future.

The poll found Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s conservatives would receive 37% of the decided vote if an election were to happen now, up three points from last month. Thomas Muclair and the NDP would receive 35% of the vote, up by two points. The Liberals, now being led by interim Bob Rae, are down two points, supported by 19% of the electorate. Nationally, the Bloc Quebecois is at 5% and the Greens, led by Elizabeth May, are supported by 3%.

Darrel Bricker, Ipsos Reid president said that the survey shows a significant shift, “Longer term, politics are starting to move towards a more economically derived split, combined with this more urban-rural divide.”
