Reward Credit Cards

Reward credit cards offer you rewards for using them you don't have to change anything about the way you spend! There are lots of different reward cards on the Canadian market, and you can find one to reflect your wants from hotel benefits to air miles or redeem points at one of many retailers.

What are Reward Credit Cards?

Reward credit cards are just like regular credit cards, yet they carry benefits. By spending using the card, you can collect points with one of a wide variety of specific reward programs:

  • Hotel chains
  • Airlines
  • Retailers
  • Online shopping portals

You may either collect points by using the card at a specific participating outlet or you may be able to use the card anywhere and still collect your rewards.

How Can I Earn Rewards?

The process is very easy use the card just as you would any normal credit card, and the more dollars you spend, the more points you earn. That does not mean you are being encouraged to go and spend more money than before use the card just as wisely and carefully as you would a regular card.

Remember: some cards only allow points-collecting at participating outlets. Use the card elsewhere and you can use it as normal, but you will not be collecting points for doing so.

Who Can Apply?

Applying for a reward credit card is just like applying for any regular credit card. You will need to fill out an application and you may be subject to a credit check. Ensure that you find out the requirements before you apply for a card these could include:

  • Minimum age 18
  • Minimum income
  • Permanent resident of Canada
  • Good credit score

Most card firms are pretty clear about what they need from you in order to make your application successful it is worth finding out in advance because even just an application will be registered on your credit report, even if it is unsuccessful.

What are the Benefits?

The benefits from reward credit cards are pretty obvious: be rewarded for spending! If you are someone who uses particular brands or services frequently (typically an airline), you could pile up useful points which you could redeem later for a great freebie perhaps a free flight or free hotel accommodation.

Some reward credit cards are offered with a $0 annual fee, so you can enjoy that extra benefit. Compare carefully to choose the best card for you.

What are the Disadvantages?

It may seem like there is no drawbacks to a reward credit cards, yet there are one or two things to be careful about. You may get carried away with the idea that you are getting something for nothing however, as you do need to spend to collect points, it is wise to keep an eye on your budget.

Reward credit card still carry interest rates which could be high so remember to find out as much as you can about an offer before you apply.
